Tản Đà Nguyễn Khắc Hiếu (19 May 1889- 7 June 1939) was a Vietnamese poet, writer and playwright.

This poem is actually an aria from a hat cheo theater work that Tan Da wrote called "Thien Thai," meaning "T'ien T'ai Mountain," or "paradise." It's based on the story of two young Chinese scholars in the 1st century AD--Liu Chien and Juan Chao. They got lost while searching for medicinal plants in the vicinity of T'ien T'ai mountain. They followed the Peach Tree Spring and ended up in a paradise with beautiful fairy deities who became their lovers. After half a year they became homesick and although they knew they could never return to paradise, they decided to go back to the mortal realm. Upon returning they discovered that nearly three hundred years had elapsed. Tan Da's poem captures this multi-layered sense of time--the half year and single step contrast with the stones, moss and waters in their relentless natural processes with the thousand years of moon play. Paradise ultimately becomes a beautiful memory that must be left behind as they return to the mortal world.

Tản Đà (19 tháng 5 1889 - 7 tháng 6 1939) tên thật là Nguyễn Khắc Hiếu. Ông là một nhà thơ, nhà văn và viết kịch nổi tiếng của Việt Nam.

Bài  Tống biệt với 13 hàng chữ  là bài từ khúc theo điệu Hoa Phong Lạc  trích từ vở chèo Thiên Thai do Tản Đà sáng tác năm 1922. Nội dung vở diễn tích hai chàng thư sinh là Lưu Thần và Nguyễn Triệu đời Hán, nhân Tết Đoan Ngọ (ngày mùng 5 tháng 5 âm lịch), vào núi Thiên Thai (Chiết Giang, Trung Quốc) hái thuốc bị lạc lối về. Hai chàng bất ngờ gặp được tiên nữ, rồi kết làm vợ chồng. Sống hạnh phúc được nửa năm thì cả hai cùng nhớ quê muốn về thăm. Các tiên nữ cho biết đây là cõi tiên, đã về trần thì không thể trở lại, song vẫn không giữ được hai chàng.

Lưu, Nguyễn về làng thấy quang cảnh khác xưa, hoá ra họ đã xa nhà đến bảy đời. Buồn rầu, hai chàng tìm đường trở lại Thiên Thai, thì không còn thấy các tiên đâu nữa. Kể từ đấy, họ cũng đi đâu biệt tích, không ai còn thấy nữa.

Nửa năm tiên cảnh,

Một phút trần ai,

Peach leaves scattered on the Paradise way,

The spring and oriole regretfully bid good-bye.

Six months in Paradise,

One minute  Earth’s day.

Old wishes, short love, must I sight!

Stones wear, mosses fade,

Water flows, flowers fly,

The crane soars up the blue sky.

Heaven and Earth an eternal farewell say.

After six months living in a wonderful paradise

I'm taking the first step back to earthly life.

Let old wishes and ephemeral love fade away.

And the water carries off the flowers.

As the crane flies high in the firmament,

Let heaven and earth part forever

The old path
